In volleyball there are obviously rules and there are also positions. The first time that you play volleyball, you probably will be very confused and its fine because you're brave enough to even try something new. To make it a bit easier I had decided to make a blog on just rules and positions itself. If this just makes it more confusing than I my advice to you would be to talk to your parents or teachers at school because you would never know that they might of played volleyball before. This would work because I had tried it on both my parents and my teachers at school. So now let’s get in to the real rules and positions.

Positions :

Volleyball has multiple positions, meaning the positions on the court and the positions on which you play for. The first type of position I would like to explain is the positions on court. This might be a bit tricky to memorize but soon enough you’ll get the hang of it.

Positions On Court:

When you’re on court there are positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Position 1 is in the right back corner if your looking at it from behind your side of the court. Position 2 is just in front of position 1, so it’s in the front right corner. Position 3 is beside position 2, so basically it’s in the front center. Position 4 is in the left front corner, position 5 is in the back left corner, and position 6 is in the dead center. When your team goes up to serve that’s when position 1 goes to the back of the gym of your side and hits the ball over to the other side.

When this is in play the other team takes a step back but the setter stays on the net. Like I said before we will talk about that stuff later. Since the setter is on the net, the player in position 1 moves up, the player in position 6 than moves to where the person in position 1 was and then the player in position 3 goes to where position 6 would originally be. I know this sounds confusing but if you have ever went to a real volleyball game you will see what i’m trying to say. When this happens, they are then in something called “serve receive”.

As I said before this is when your team has the other team serving the ball to your side. Now when we look at the other side, while their team is serving, it looks a bit different. Basically Positions 4, 3, and 2 go up on the net and positions 5 and 6 stay where they are but then when the ball either looks like it’s going to be out on the other side or will actually get in on the other side, the team surviving then let’s the player playing ‘Middle” stay on net when “Power” and “Setter” would move back. When they start to move back, Position 5 take a small step back. Once they officially get into their new positions they just continue a basic rally.

Player Positions:

There are only 3 player positions in all of volleyball. The positions are “Middle”, “Setter” and “Power”. The first position that I would like to chat about is the position called “Middle”. I know this position actually very well since I was on the Senior Girls Volleyball Team, and I played that position. Now I still play that position, now on the Junior Volleyball Team since Senior season is over. Today i’m still on the Junior Volleyball Team and me and 1 of my good friends are the captains. Before I talk about the Player’s Positions I would like to say a quick point. When you are on court with your team their are 6 people on court at a time, so basically there would be 2 of each player position. So once your team is on court your coach would have to set your team up with your Middles across each other, with your Setters across each other and same with your Powers. Now let’s get started, first let’s talk about position Middle. In a game position Middle is a big part, when I first explained that a player had to jump on the net, I literally meant that. Once your team hits the ball over your net, your middle would go up on the net and track the ball, once they see the ball coming over, they would try to block it, by jumping up, putting your arms up and pushing the ball back to the other side. But here is when it gets tricky. If you try to block it with no one around you, and it ends up with hitting your hand falling on to your, that would count as a touch and you would most likely lose the point for your team. But, if someone on the other team trying to block/tip it over with it interfering with your block and it ends up about to fall on your side, you could try to bring your arm down and hit it back up, this does not count as a hit since you interfered with another player. Next is Setter, Setter is actually exactly what it sounds like, passing the ball to another individual. The Setter is always on net but when the ball goes over the Middle would come up and play their role. Once the the team see’s the ball come over, the Middle comes off and the Setter goes on. And last but not least is Power, Power is the original player who would hit the ball over the net, but in this case, the Setter would have the choice to set either the Power or Middle. There is not much to power but let’s talk about when a individual serve’s. When your teammate goes up to serve, your whole team goes up on net, who are on in that shift. Once the ball goes over the Power and Setter move back and let the Middle do it’s role. Once the ball comes to your side, your Middle would shift off with the Setter filling in and leaving the Power to stay where they are. It might be a bit confusing but if you practice, it would boost up your knowledge on this sport.

Rules :

There are so many Rules in Volleyball, I can’t possibly list them all since I only know so much. The rules of a game/tournament depend on the skill level, or size of court, and etc. But here are some of the rules that we use here at my school, when we host games or tournaments:

  • Only ONE step over line when serving

  • NO dangling jewelry (earrings and necklace)

  • Touches on net count

  • If your foot touches the line that divides that gym, then the point will automatically go to the other team

For my school, as you can tell we don’t have many specific rules and of course these rules include the boundaries and things like that but these are the specific rules. My school has so little rules for volleyball since we are one of the smaller schools in our city.
